Perched on a white limestone promontory overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Vieste is one of the most captivating towns in the Gargano area of Apulia. Its historic center is a maze of narrow alleys, whitewashed houses, and stairways that suddenly open onto sweeping sea views. At the top stands the Swabian Castle and the cathedral, watching over a dramatic coastline of cliffs, sea stacks, and tiny coves that have earned Vieste the nickname “the pearl of the Gargano.” Vieste’s beaches are among the finest in southern Italy, with long stretches of golden sand and crystal‑clear water. The most iconic sight is Pizzomunno, a towering white rock that rises from the beach at the edge of town, surrounded by local legends of love and longing. To the south and north of Vieste, the coast is dotted with hidden bays and marine caves, best explored by boat tour or kayak, especially in the warm months from late spring to early autumn. Beyond sun and sea, Vieste offers a genuine taste of Apulian life.
